We'll have to pass along this information to my son-in-law, Larry Jefferson (daughter Mary's husband). He has worked for a telephone company in Mountain Lake, MN for many years. Thanks again. Love your site. It is very well done. I started collecting phones in the early 70s but stopped to raise two kids and have just gotten the bug again. I am interested in mainly Canadian phones but they are getting harder to find so I might have to start collecting others. Keep up the good site and maybe I will end up buying something some day. Ron

I have two wall phones. They appear to be very old but are in perfect condition. I have one in my garage and one in the house and use them every day. They don't have dials - just a crank which rings the bell. The previous owner told me they are called "pony phones". According to him, they were purchased from the railroad. One came from a station in San Francisco and another came from a county station in New Mexico. They are marked Monophone from Chicago on the top and are black with a gold design on the front bottom. I would love to know more about them. If you have any information, or know where I could research them more, please email me. Thank you!

Geoff mawdsley from Southampton England. Thanks for your great web-site! I have been interested in telephones and automatic switching equipment for some years now. When I was an apprentice in 1966, the technician had worked on the old Portsmouth exchange installed by AE Co in 1915. After this, all the equip[ment was made in UK> I have never seen one of the old strowger switches with upright relays- do you know of anyone who has Central Office equipment as their hobby? Also, I would like to get an AE co candlestick of 1912 used on the first auto exchange in UK- Epsom. It has a "Mercedes" type dial, nickel plated transmitter and switchook with "H" in it. Any chance of acquiring one of these? Kind regards from England, geoff mawdsley

Your site is wonderful and very well put together. I work with children a lot and am keeping your address as an educational reference. I have heard it told back in 1937 when my father was five, he was always in trouble with his mother for taking the phone apart completely and putting it back together again. No amount of punishment stopped him. It always worked with no problems afterwards though. He was a genius and became a brilliant electrical engineer. What type of phone would that have been? Have Old Western Electric Phone. Unusual real walnut or cherry backboard and lower box with nickel plated hookswitch on bottom box. Upper backboard serves as mounting board only for the mouthpiecewhich also has a nickel plated metal mounting bracket. Think it's a common battery because only a button exists which was probably used to signal the operator. Bottom box also hax double brass bells similar to commonventional wood phone which has these bells mounted on the top box. No ring generator. This phone is in an incredible almost new condition. How do I find out what it is and what it is worth? Thanks, Guy.

I found this site to be extremely interesting. My Father started working for Southern California Telephone Company (later Pacific Telephone, Pacific Bell and now SBC) two months before I was born in 1945. He retired 32 yeara later. My Mother went to work for Pacific Telephone when I was 16 and retired 20 years later. So I was raised by the phone company. My sister is an Executive Secretary for SBC now and I worked 14 years as a Service Rep for Pacific Bell. We are really a 'phone company' family and I thoroughtly enjoyed your site. Thanks.

Wonderful Site!! All the pictures and information that this site provided is very helpful for my research. I would like to ask you if you have any latest pictures of telephones, and more information on how telephones have drastically changed from the 1800's till the present for my project. I would really appereciate it, and definately mention your site, on my credits. Thank you, very much and please do reply on my request through e-mail. Best of luck!

I love this. I had a project in history, and this page helped a lot. I just wish there were more pictures, mainly of people using the telephone back in the 1800's

You have a beautiful collection. Makes my mouth water. Let me recommend a small museum to visit on the island of Curacao, Netherlands Antilles, in the Caribbean. It belongs to the local telephone company, SETAR. Almost everything was made by L.M.Ericsson, including an ancient magneto switchboard where connections are made, not with plugs, cords and jacks, but with brass pins which connected heavy brass bars, running vertically and horizontally, on the face of the switchboard.

I recently found two phones in top of our garage very similar to the 1879 Top Box Viaduct Hardware phone you show in this article. The brand name is Kellogg, made in Chicago, USA. They are in excillant condition. As family history has it, they belonged to my Great Grandfather and Grandmother. Do they have any value? Would appreciate any information about these two phones.

Very nice site of yours! I just obtained a 1959 Western Electric 233-G payphone. Always wanted one of those. I'm 43 & remember using payphones like these in St. Louis when I was a virtual kid. Calls were a dime & I never could forget & still love the "ding ding" of a dime being deposited. While a nickel would strike the bell once, two nickels (10 cent phone call) would strike the same spot in rapid order making it's own characteristic "ding ding". While I thought the quarter slot had no dings, it actually has a little chime coil the coin strikes!!! Have to listen close to hear it as it is a quick and rather flat note. Long live old phones. I have to get more!!! Great site & happy collecting.
